A tsunami warning was put in force for New Zealand just after 8.30pm, when the US tsunami monitoring centre widened a warning to virtually the entire Pacific coast, including Australia and South America.
New Zealand's Civil Defence said a small tsunami was expected to hit here shortly after 6am on Saturday. It warned boaties to shift vessels.

Even though I have not been there YET, everyone knows Japan is real close to my heart. Therefore, I would like to plead with you all, to say a prayer for Japan and its people, as well as the surrounding countries. It is said that the quake has been the largest ever since Dec 04. With a 8.9-magnitude trembler. "When you jump a magnitude from 7 to 8, it's not 10 times stronger, it's a 1000 times stronger," said CNN International meteorologist Ivan Cabrera. "With an ... earthquake that shallow, that close to shore, there will be more than one tsunami."
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PRAY AND MAY GOD BE WITH THEM AND GUIDE THEM!
